What should you do after the flowers fall?

First, confirm the plant is healthy. Continue normal light and root care; flowering is only one part of its growth cycle.

If the flower spike turns brown or dry, cut it near the base with clean pruners without damaging leaves or roots. If a standard large-flowered Phalaenopsis has a green spike with unused nodes, the American Orchid Society says cutting just above an unused node can prompt a secondary branch. That second display is often smaller and asks more of the plant, so removing the spike at the base and allowing recovery is also a sound choice.
