The Question Behind "Which Window Is Best?"
There's no single best window for plants, which is a frustrating answer until you see why. A south-facing sill that's perfect for a jade plant will slowly cook a calathea. A north window that starves a fiddle leaf fig is exactly right for a fern. "Best" depends on the plant — but the window itself follows rules you can learn to read, and once you can, you stop guessing about where things go.
The direction a window faces is the single most useful fact about the light in your home. It sets a ceiling on how much sun that spot can ever receive, and it shapes when during the day the light arrives. Everything else — pot, water, fertilizer — is downstream of getting this right. So before we talk about plants, let's learn to read the four exposures like a grower does.
One Disclaimer First: Which Hemisphere Are You In?
All of the compass advice below assumes the Northern Hemisphere, because that's where the sun tracks across the southern half of the sky. If you're in the Southern Hemisphere — Australia, New Zealand, southern Africa, most of South America — the sun sits in the northern sky, and you should swap "north" and "south" in everything that follows. Your north-facing windows are the bright ones; your south-facing windows are the dim ones. East and west stay exactly the same in both hemispheres, because the sun always rises in the east and sets in the west.
That single swap trips up more transplanted plant owners than any other piece of advice, so it's worth fixing in your head before we go on.
The Four Exposures, One at a Time
South-facing windows: the brightest light you have
A south window (Northern Hemisphere) receives the most sun of any exposure, and the most direct sun — the actual beam landing on leaves — for the longest stretch of the day. In winter, when the sun sits low in the sky, that beam reaches deep into the room; in summer, when the sun climbs high overhead, it falls closer to the sill.
This is the exposure for plants that genuinely want sun on their leaves: cacti, most succulents, jade, citrus, and other Mediterranean and desert species. It's also excellent for bright-indirect tropicals — as long as you keep them a foot or two back from the glass, or diffuse the direct beam with a sheer curtain. Placed right on a summer south sill, many tropical foliage plants will show bleached or crisped patches within weeks.
The honest caution: a south window is a lot of light to manage. It's the most powerful exposure and the easiest one to scorch a sensitive plant in. Think of it as a dimmer you control with distance and curtains, not a single setting.
North-facing windows: gentle, steady, and dim
A north window never receives direct sun (with the minor exception of brief, glancing early-morning or late-evening light in high summer). What it offers instead is soft, even, diffuse sky light — cool and consistent, with no harsh beam to burn anything and no dramatic swing from morning to afternoon.
The trade-off is that there simply isn't much of it. A north window is the dimmest of the four exposures, and the light falls off fast as you move into the room. Right against the glass, an unobstructed north window can support plenty of foliage plants — pothos, philodendron, ferns, many aroids, snake plants, ZZ plants. A few feet back, it slides quickly toward genuine low light.
North windows are underrated for one specific reason: they're forgiving. There's no scorch risk and no afternoon heat spike, so a plant that would suffer on a south sill often sits contentedly in a north window. Just keep expectations honest — this is a spot for tolerating and holding steady, not for fast growth or flowering.
East-facing windows: the most forgiving in the house
An east window catches direct sun in the morning, when it's gentle, cool, and low-angle, then shifts to bright diffuse light for the rest of the day. Morning sun is the mildest direct light a plant can get — the air hasn't heated up yet, and the beam is soft — so an east exposure gives you many of the benefits of direct sun with very little of the scorch risk.
This makes east windows the safe default for the widest range of houseplants. Calatheas, pothos, most philodendrons and other aroids, ferns, peace lilies, spider plants — the great middle of the houseplant world is happy here. If you're unsure where a new plant should go and you have an east window free, that's usually the right first guess.
West-facing windows: bright light with a hot afternoon
A west window is, in raw light terms, close to a south window — plenty of light, with direct sun on the leaves. The difference is timing. West sun arrives in the afternoon, after the day (and the room) has already heated up, so that same beam feels harsher than gentle morning east sun. The combination of intense late-day light and accumulated heat is what makes west exposures the trickiest to place sensitive plants in.
For sun-lovers, a west window is excellent. For bright-indirect tropicals, it can be great too — just watch through the summer, when hot afternoon sun is most likely to fade or crisp the most exposed leaves. Pulling a plant back from the glass, or hanging a sheer, turns a harsh west window into beautiful bright indirect light.

What Overrides the Compass
Compass direction sets the ceiling, but four things can lower it — sometimes dramatically. Two "south windows" in different homes can differ more than a textbook south and east window, and the reason is almost always on this list.
- Obstructions outside. A large tree, a neighboring building, a balcony above, or a deep roof overhang can shade a window for much or all of the day. A south window blocked by an oak may deliver light more like an east or even a north exposure. Always look at what's outside the glass, not just which way it points.
- Distance from the glass. This is the big one, and it's easy to underestimate. Indoor light falls off steeply as you move away from a window — a plant six or eight feet back can be receiving a small fraction of what a plant on the sill gets. A bright south window and a dim interior wall can be in the same room. Light lives near windows.
- The window itself. Size matters (a small window lets in less than a large one facing the same way), and so does the glass. Many modern windows have low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings and tinting that cut a meaningful slice of the light and most of the UV. Screens, grime, and blinds all subtract more. A clean, large, untinted window is worth a lot.
- The season. The sun's height and the day's length both shift through the year. Winter days are shorter and the sun sits lower, so most exposures deliver a fraction of their summer light — a spot that supported a plant in July can quietly starve it in January. The low winter sun also reaches deeper into the room through south and west windows, which occasionally means a plant that was safe in summer catches an unexpected winter beam. How to Actually Read Your Own Window
You don't need instruments to audit a window. You need to pay attention for one day.
- Note the direction. A phone compass takes five seconds. Stand at the window and see which way you're facing looking out.
- Watch the sun, or picture its path. Check the window in the morning, at midday, and in late afternoon. When does direct sun actually land on the sill, and for how long? Morning-only sun says east; afternoon sun says west; sun most of the day says south; never a direct beam says north (or a heavily obstructed window).
- Do the shadow test at the plant's spot. At midday, hold your hand about a foot above where the plant will sit. A crisp, hard-edged shadow means direct or very bright light. A soft, clearly-defined-but-fuzzy shadow means bright indirect. A faint smudge means medium. No real shadow means low light — no matter how bright the room feels to your eye, which adjusts far too well to be a reliable judge.
- Look outside. Note any trees, buildings, or overhangs that shade the glass, and remember that a bare winter tree becomes a light-blocking canopy in summer.

They're rough, but they don't need to be precise to tell a 100-foot-candle corner from a 1,000-foot-candle sill. Matching Plants to Windows Without Overthinking It
Once you've read a window, placement gets simple. A rough starting map for the Northern Hemisphere:
- South sill: succulents, cacti, jade, citrus. Bright-indirect tropicals do well a step back or behind a sheer.
- East window: almost anything labeled "bright indirect" — the most flexible exposure you have.
- West window: sun-lovers on the sill; tropicals set back, with a summer eye on scorch.
- North window: foliage plants that tolerate lower light, kept close to the glass. Snake plants, ZZ plants, pothos, ferns, and many aroids do fine here — slowly.
Whatever you choose, let the plant grade your work over the following weeks. Leggy, stretching, reaching-toward-the-glass growth means the spot is too dim; faded, bleached, or crisped leaves mean it's too bright.
