A plant can't get up and move to a better window, so it does the next best thing: it changes shape. Stems stretch or stay compact, leaves deepen or bleach, new growth arrives large and healthy or small and pale. All of that is the plant negotiating with the light it's been handed. Learning to read those changes is one of the highest-leverage skills in houseplant care, because light is the input side of a plant's metabolism — nearly every other problem you'll chase downstream traces back to it.
The catch is that light problems are slow problems. A single scorched leaf can appear in an afternoon, but most light signals — legginess, fading color, a stalled plant that just sits there — develop over weeks. That slowness is exactly why they get misread. By the time a plant looks obviously unhappy, we reach for the watering can, when the real issue has been the corner it's been sitting in the whole time.

Too little light is by far the more common of the two problems, mostly because rooms are dimmer than they feel. Our eyes adjust so smoothly that a spot that reads as "bright enough" to us can deliver a fraction of what a plant needs. Here is what a light-starved plant does about it.
- It stretches toward the light. Stems elongate and the gaps between leaves grow wider, so the plant looks stringy and sparse rather than full. This "reaching" is the clearest single sign, and it has a name worth knowing (more below).
- New leaves come in small and pale. Fresh growth is the most honest report a plant files. When each new leaf is smaller, thinner, and lighter green than the mature leaves below it, the plant is rationing — it can't afford to build full-sized foliage on the light it's getting.
- It leans, hard. A plant tilting persistently toward the window is voting with its whole body. A little lean is normal; a plant that re-aims itself within days of every quarter-turn is telling you the light source is both weak and one-sided.
- Variegation fades to plain green. The white and cream parts of a variegated leaf don't photosynthesize. In dim light, many variegated plants — pothos is the textbook case — produce greener and greener leaves to claw back photosynthetic surface. That reversion is a rational response to a light deficit, not a defect.
- Lower leaves yellow and drop. When a plant can't feed all its leaves, it sheds the oldest, shadiest ones first and reclaims their nutrients. Slow loss of the bottom leaves, with no other obvious cause, often means the whole plant is running a deficit.
- The soil stays wet for days. A plant in low light grows slowly, so it drinks slowly, so the mix stays damp far longer than you'd expect. This is the trap that makes light problems look like watering problems — more on that shortly.
- Nothing happens at all. Through an entire growing season, no new leaves, no size, no change. Stalled growth in spring and summer, when a plant should be active, is one of the loudest quiet signals there is.
What "leggy" actually means
A leggy plant — botanists say etiolated — is one that has stretched abnormally in search of light. The stem between leaves (the internode) elongates, the growth is thin and weak, and color is often washed-out. It happens because a shaded plant floods its stems with growth hormones that drive elongation: the plant is gambling that if it just grows tall enough, fast enough, it'll break into brighter light. Indoors, where the light isn't going to improve on its own, that gamble produces a sparse, floppy plant instead.
Two things are worth being honest about. First, legginess doesn't reverse — a stretched stem stays stretched. You fix the future, not the past: improve the light, and new growth comes in compact again. Second, the cure is usually pruning plus better light together. Cutting a leggy plant back encourages fuller regrowth, but only if you've also solved the reason it stretched. Prune into the same dim corner and you'll simply grow a second leggy plant.
Signs Your Plant Is Getting Too Much Light
Too much light is the less common problem, but it moves faster and does more permanent damage, so it's worth recognizing on sight. These are the classic too-much-light plant symptoms:
- Faded, washed-out color. The leaves most exposed to strong sun lose their depth of green and look bleached or yellowish, as if the color has been sun-faded out of them. This is often the first, gentlest warning before actual damage.
- Bleached or crisped patches — sun scorch. Tan, white, or dry brown patches on the surfaces that catch direct sun. Scorch is a burn: the affected tissue is dead and will not heal or green back up, though the plant can grow past it.
- Damage concentrated on the sun-facing side. Unlike a nutrient or watering problem, which tends to affect the plant fairly evenly, light damage clusters on the leaves and the side of each leaf pointed at the window. Which surfaces are hit is a strong clue in itself.
- Leaves curling or folding at the brightest hours. Some plants defensively fold or curl along the leaf's length during peak sun to reduce the surface they expose, then relax later. Curling that tracks the sun's daily peak points to intensity, not thirst.
- Afternoon wilt despite moist soil. When strong sun and heat pull water out of the leaves faster than the roots can resupply it, a plant droops in the hot part of the day even though the soil is damp — then recovers by evening. Persistent wilting in bright heat with wet soil is a light-and-heat signal, not an underwatering one.
Direct sun through glass, especially long, hot, west-facing afternoon exposure in summer, is the usual culprit. It's also worth remembering that genuinely sun-loving plants — cacti, most succulents, jade — want this intensity, so "too much light" is always relative to the specific plant. When Light Trouble Dresses as a Watering Problem
This is the single most common misdiagnosis in houseplant care, so it deserves its own moment.
A plant in too little light drinks slowly, so its soil stays wet. Wet soil plus a droopy, unhappy plant reads, to most of us, as either "needs water" or "overwatered" — and so we adjust the watering while the actual cause, the dim spot, goes untouched. The tell is that a light-starved plant is also stretched, pale, and slow, and the wet soil is a consequence of the weak light, not an independent problem. Fix the light and the watering issue often resolves itself, because a plant in decent light dries its pot at a sensible pace.

How Fast Do These Signs Appear?
Timing is a diagnostic clue on its own. Roughly:
- Sun scorch and bleaching: hours to a day or two — fast enough to appear after a single move into direct sun, or the first hot week of summer.
- Afternoon wilting in strong light: same day, on a daily cycle, worst in heat.
- Fading color: a week or two of consistent overexposure.
- Legginess and small pale leaves: weeks, as the plant builds stretched new growth.
- Variegation reverting: weeks to a couple of months.
- A fully stalled plant: an entire season of no progress.
The pattern: too-much-light damage tends to arrive suddenly and stay (it's a burn), while too-little-light signals creep in gradually and can be reversed with better placement. If a symptom appeared overnight, suspect an intensity or scorch problem. If it snuck up over a month, suspect a deficit.
Before You Move Anything, Confirm
Plants react slowly, so a hasty relocation just swaps one problem for another. Spend five minutes confirming the diagnosis first.
- Do the shadow test. Hold your hand a foot above the plant's spot at midday. A crisp, hard-edged shadow means direct sun; a soft but clearly defined shadow means bright indirect light; a faint smudge means medium; no shadow at all means low light — whatever the room feels like to you.
- Read which way the symptoms point. Damage on the sun-facing side means too much. A lean and stretch toward the glass means too little. The direction of the trouble is half the answer.
- Measure at the plant, not the window. Light falls off steeply indoors — a plant a few feet back can be getting a small fraction of what the sill receives. A phone light-meter app is imprecise but perfectly able to tell a 10x difference, which is all you need.
- Account for the season and the window. A south or west window that was gentle in winter can turn harsh by July; a spot that was fine in summer can starve a plant by January as the sun drops and days shorten. Fixing It Without Overcorrecting
If the plant wants more light:
- Move it closer to the window, or to a brighter one — often just three feet makes the difference.
- Acclimate gradually. Jumping a plant straight from a dim corner into a blazing sill is how you scorch something that would have adjusted fine over a week or two.
- Prune leggy growth to encourage fuller regrowth — but only once the light is genuinely better, or you'll just grow more of the same.
- Rotate the pot a quarter-turn every week or two so the plant grows evenly instead of one-sidedly.
- If the room simply doesn't have the light, a modern LED grow light is a legitimate fix — it works by running long hours rather than blinding intensity.
If the plant is getting too much light:
- Pull it back from the glass, or diffuse the beam with a sheer curtain, especially on hot west-facing afternoons.
- Move it gradually here too; even a step down in light is a change the plant has to adjust to.

In both directions, the proof you got it right is new growth: correctly sized, correctly colored, correctly spaced leaves are the plant's way of confirming the new spot works. Old damage won't undo itself, so judge the fix by what grows next, not by what's already there.
