A Better Way to Compare Locations

If you do not trust the app’s absolute number, use ratios and trends within the same device.

Suppose the app reads 2,400 lux at the leaves beside a window and 600 lux on a shelf farther into the room at the same time. The window position is reading four times the illuminance on that device because 2,400 ÷ 600 = 4. The absolute calibration may be imperfect, but the placement difference is still useful if the sensor behaves consistently.

Repeat the comparison across the day. If the shelf stays at one quarter of the window reading, it is not “basically the same light” because both look comfortable to you. Move the plant, rotate it, or add suitable artificial light based on its needs.

Measuring Grow Lights

For a simple white grow light, a lux app can help you map bright and dim areas, but PPFD is the better unit when setting plant-usable intensity. Follow a grid:

  1. Set the fixture at its intended height.
