How to Get Rid of Fungus Gnats: 4 Fixes That Actually Work

The Short Answer: Dry Soil Kills Gnats
To get rid of fungus gnats, you have to break their life cycle, not just swat the adults. Let the top two inches of soil dry out completely between waterings, put up yellow sticky traps to catch the flying adults, and treat the soil with BTI (a bacteria sold as Mosquito Bits or Mosquito Dunks) to kill the larvae. Do all three at once for three to four weeks and the infestation collapses.

What Fungus Gnats Actually Are
Fungus gnats are tiny, dark, mosquito-like flies — a few millimeters long — that hover around houseplants and drift lazily into your face when you water. If you've been searching for "little flies in plant soil," this is almost certainly your bug. They are weak fliers, which is one easy way to tell them apart from fruit flies: fruit flies are fast and hang around your kitchen, while fungus gnats are slow and hang around your pots.
The adults are annoying but essentially harmless. The real problem is the larvae: small, translucent worms with black heads that live in the top inch or two of moist potting soil. They feed on fungi, algae, and decaying organic matter — and in heavy infestations, they will also nibble fine root hairs. Mature, healthy plants usually shrug this off. Seedlings, cuttings, and stressed plants can genuinely suffer.
Here is the fact that makes everything click: fungus gnat larvae need consistently damp soil to survive. If the surface of your soil is always wet, you are running a gnat nursery. The life cycle you are trying to break
A female gnat lays her eggs in moist soil. The eggs hatch in a few days, the larvae feed in the soil for roughly two weeks, pupate, and emerge as new adults — which immediately start laying the next generation. The whole cycle takes about three to four weeks in typical room temperatures.
This is why killing adults alone never works. For every gnat you slap, dozens of larvae are maturing in the soil. Any fix that actually works has to target the soil.

Each of these attacks a different stage of the life cycle. Used together, they end most infestations in under a month.

Fix 1: Let the top of the soil dry out
This is the free fix, and it is not optional — the other three fixes are far less effective if the soil stays soggy.
Larvae live in the top layer of soil and die without moisture. So:
- Water only when the top 1–2 inches are fully dry. Stick a finger in past the second knuckle. If you feel any dampness, wait.
- Bottom-water while you fight the infestation. Set the pot in a tray of water for 15–20 minutes so moisture wicks up from below, then let it drain. The root zone gets water; the surface — where the larvae live — stays dry and hostile.
- Empty saucers and cachepots. Standing water keeps everything humid and gives adults extra places to breed.

Fix 2: Yellow sticky traps for the adults
Fungus gnat adults are strongly attracted to the color yellow. Yellow sticky traps — small coated cards you stake into the pot or clip near the foliage — catch them by the dozen.
Be clear about what traps do and do not do:
- They do: remove egg-laying females, cut the next generation down, and give you a visible count of how bad the problem is and whether it is improving.
- They do not: touch the larvae. Traps alone will slow an infestation but rarely end it.
Place traps horizontally near the soil surface or low on a stake — adults spend most of their time within a few inches of the soil. Replace cards when they are covered. If a fresh trap stays nearly empty for a week or two, you are winning.
Fix 3: BTI — the larvae killer
BTI (Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis) is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that is lethal to fungus gnat and mosquito larvae but harmless to plants, people, and pets when used as directed. It is the closest thing to a silver bullet in this fight, and it is the active ingredient in products commonly sold as Mosquito Bits and Mosquito Dunks.
How to use it for houseplants:
- Make a BTI tea. Soak the granules (or a chunk of a dunk) in your watering can — a common approach is a few tablespoons of Bits per gallon of water, left to soak for 30 minutes or more. Check your product's label for its specific rate.
- Water with it. Use the tea whenever the plant actually needs watering. The bacteria wash into the top layer of soil, larvae ingest them, and die.
- Repeat with every watering for 3–4 weeks. BTI kills larvae but not eggs, pupae, or adults, so you need to keep it present in the soil for at least one full life cycle.
Some people sprinkle granules directly on the soil surface instead. That works too, though the tea method distributes the bacteria more evenly.
A note on hydrogen peroxide: the popular home remedy — one part 3% hydrogen peroxide to four parts water, poured through the soil — does kill larvae on contact. It is a reasonable emergency measure, but it has no residual effect, so eggs that hatch the next day are unaffected. BTI is more reliable because it persists between treatments.
Fix 4: Repot, or top-dress with a gnat barrier
For severe infestations — or old, broken-down potting mix that stays wet for a week or more — sometimes the fastest path is to remove the habitat entirely.
Full repot: slide the plant out, shake or rinse off as much old soil as you reasonably can, and repot into fresh, free-draining mix. Bagged mixes heavy in unfinished compost or bark that has begun decomposing are gnat magnets; a chunkier, faster-drying blend makes your pots much less hospitable. Top-dressing barrier: if a full repot is impractical, cover the soil surface with a half-inch to an inch of coarse sand, fine gravel, or decorative grit. The dry, fast-draining layer makes it physically difficult for adults to reach the soil to lay eggs and for emerging adults to escape. It is not foolproof, but combined with fixes 1–3 it closes the loop.
A Realistic 3-Week Battle Plan
- Day 1: Stop watering on a schedule. Set out yellow sticky traps. Start soaking BTI for your next watering. Check every plant in the room — gnats spread, and treating one pot while its neighbor stays infested is how people end up fighting gnats for months.
- Week 1: Bottom-water only when the top two inches are dry, using BTI tea. Expect to still see adults — the pupae already in the soil will keep emerging for a while. This is normal, not failure.
- Week 2: Trap counts should be visibly dropping. Keep going. Repot any pot that stays wet for many days at a stretch.
- Week 3–4: Few to no new adults on fresh traps. Continue BTI for one more week to catch stragglers, then return to normal (correct) watering.
Why They Keep Coming Back — and How to Prevent It
If gnats return every few months, one of these is usually the reason:
- You went back to overwatering. The number-one cause. Constantly moist surface soil will re-invite them from a single stray gnat.
- A new plant brought them in. Nursery pots very often carry eggs or larvae. Quarantine new arrivals away from your collection for a couple of weeks and watch the soil.
- A bag of infested potting mix. Opened bags stored somewhere damp can harbor gnats. Store mix sealed and dry; some growers pre-treat new mix with BTI as cheap insurance.
- A hidden moisture source. A perpetually wet saucer, a drainless cachepot with water pooled inside, even an overwatered pot of herbs on the windowsill.

When to Escalate
If you have genuinely done all four fixes for a month and still have gnats, two biological options are worth knowing about: beneficial nematodes (typically Steinernema feltiae), microscopic worms watered into the soil that hunt larvae, and predatory soil mites (often sold as Stratiolaelaps or Hypoaspis) that patrol the top layer of soil. Both are used widely in greenhouses, are safe around pets, and are available online for home growers. They cost more than BTI, so treat them as the second line, not the first.
Most people never need them. Dry soil, sticky traps, and BTI — done consistently for one full life cycle — ends the vast majority of fungus gnat problems for good.
