How should you quarantine a new houseplant?
Keep a new houseplant physically separate from the rest of your collection for two to three weeks. Give it suitable light and temperature, inspect every leaf, stem, pot edge and drainage hole on arrival, then check again whenever you water. Use separate tools and contain runoff. If you find a pest or unexplained disease symptom, keep the plant isolated until the problem is identified and repeated checks show no further signs.
Quarantine is an observation period, not a treatment. Its purpose is to give small pests, eggs or symptoms that were easy to miss at the shop time to become visible without giving them direct access to established plants.
Inspect before the plant comes home
Start at the shop or collection point. University of Illinois Extension recommends examining leaves, stems, pot and soil when choosing a plant. A healthy-looking plant is not a guarantee, but a careful first check can keep an obvious problem out of the car and house.
Look at:
- the top and underside of several leaves;
- new growth, leaf joints, sheaths and stem crevices;
- the soil surface and the gap around the root ball;
- the pot rim, drainage holes, saucer and decorative cover;
- nearby plants on the same shelf.
Pass on a plant with an active infestation, widespread collapse or an unidentified sticky or cottony covering. A discount does not make a pest easier to contain. If you knowingly take on a rescue plant, plan a longer, completely separate recovery area before bringing it home.
Keep the plant label and receipt. The scientific name tells you what light, temperature and watering it needs during quarantine, and it is also the starting point for a reliable pet-toxicity check.
Set up the isolation area first
Choose the quarantine place before the plant arrives. A separate room with a closable door is the clearest option. If that is not possible, use a defined area well away from the collection where leaves cannot touch and where water cannot drain or splash into another pot.
The area still has to meet the new plant's basic needs. A dark cupboard is separation, but it is poor plant care. Check the species label for light and temperature requirements, keep it away from damaging heat or cold, and protect it from direct sun if the species cannot take it. A stressed plant can produce yellow leaves or wilt that make pest diagnosis harder.
Use a washable tray or saucer that belongs to the quarantine station. Set aside a cloth, watering container and any small hand tools used there. Do not share an outer pot or pebble tray with established plants during the isolation period.
Keep children and pets out of the area. Do not assume that a newly bought plant is safe because its common name sounds familiar. Verify the exact scientific name against the ASPCA toxic and non-toxic plant list before choosing its eventual location. If the identity or toxicity is uncertain, keep it inaccessible.
Do a careful arrival inspection
Put the plant on the quarantine tray and use bright light for the first inspection. The University of Minnesota Extension recommends examining all plant parts and containers, including leaf tops and undersides, pot rims, crevices, bottoms and saucers. It notes that a magnifying lens can help because some pests are very small.
Work from the top down:
- Check new leaves and growing tips for distortion or clusters of insects.
- Turn over leaves and inspect along the midrib and main veins.
- Look where leaves meet stems and where plant tissues form narrow crevices.
- Check stems for bumps, cottony material, sticky deposits or dark specks.
- Look over the soil surface for movement, larvae, mould or fallen plant material.
- Inspect the rim, drainage holes, pot bottom, saucer and any sleeve or decorative cover.
Take clear photographs of the whole plant, several leaves and the soil surface. They give you a baseline for deciding whether a mark is new, spreading or unchanged.
Remove dead leaves and loose debris. If the species has smooth, washable foliage, wipe it with plain room-temperature water and a clean damp cloth. Illinois Extension cautions that washing or leaf-polish products are not suitable for pubescent, or hairy, leaves. Do not spray an unidentified pesticide “just in case.” Diagnosis comes first, and any treatment must be labelled for the plant, pest and indoor setting.
Keep the quarantine for two to three weeks
University of Minnesota Extension advises isolating newly acquired plants for one to two weeks. University of Illinois Extension recommends two to three weeks. IndoorFlora uses the more cautious end of those ranges: keep the new arrival separate for 21 days when practical.
Twenty-one days is a monitoring window, not proof that no pest can exist. The value comes from repeated inspection. Check the plant every few days and during each watering. Use the same route each time—new growth, leaf undersides, stems, soil, rim and drainage area—so one easy-to-miss spot does not remain unchecked for three weeks.
Record the date, whether the plant was watered and what you saw. A short note such as “day 7: no webbing, no sticky residue, two old leaf marks unchanged” is enough. Photograph any new symptom from the same angle.
Do not fertilise automatically during this adjustment period. Illinois Extension notes that a newly moved plant may drop or yellow leaves while adjusting to different light and humidity, and recommends checking the soil rather than feeding during that time. Follow the species' actual moisture needs; quarantine is not a reason to keep every pot equally wet.
Use a clean handling order
IndoorFlora's cross-contamination routine is simple:
- Care for established, apparently healthy plants first.
- Handle the quarantine plant last.
- Keep its tray, cloth and tools in the quarantine area.
- Do not pour its runoff into another pot or reuse the water.
- Wash hands and clean used tools before returning to the main collection.
- Remove fallen leaves and used paper towels in a closed waste bag.
This routine does not claim that every pest spreads in the same way. It reduces the number of avoidable transfers by wet cloths, tools, hands, touching foliage and shared containers. If you have several new arrivals from the same purchase, they can share a quarantine zone, but treat that group as one unit. A pest on one means the others need renewed inspection.
Know the signs worth investigating
You do not need to identify every species of insect on sight. You do need to notice changes that deserve a closer look.
Fine webbing or pale mottling: The Royal Horticultural Society associates fine webbing and pale leaf mottling with red spider mites.
White waxy or cottony clusters: Mealybugs often collect in leaf axils, sheaths and other crevices. The RHS describes a fluffy white wax around them.
Firm bumps along veins or stems: Indoor scale insects can sit near the midrib or main veins on leaf undersides and may look more like a plant mark than an insect.
Sticky leaves or a sticky tray: Aphids, mealybugs and scale can produce honeydew, a shiny sticky material. Dark sooty growth may develop on it.
Silvery damage or dark specks: Thrips feeding can make leaves look dull or silvery, while their droppings can appear as small dark spots.
Small flies around moist mix: Fungus gnats are associated with damp growing media. A few adults are often more nuisance than plant emergency, but they are evidence to review watering and continue monitoring. Our guide to getting rid of fungus gnats covers that problem separately.

What to do if you find a problem
Keep the plant isolated. Photograph the sign, check more than one leaf and use a university extension plant clinic or authoritative pest guide to identify it. Do not move the plant beside the collection for better light while waiting for an answer; improve the quarantine position instead.
Minor insect problems can often begin with non-chemical measures. Minnesota Extension recommends wiping leaves with a damp paper towel, changing towels often, or spraying suitable plants with water. It also describes pruning when a pest is limited to a few leaves or stems. Match the method to the plant: forceful water can damage delicate foliage, and unnecessary pruning can remove healthy tissue.
If a pesticide is needed, read the complete label before buying or applying it. Minnesota Extension states that the plant being treated must appear on the label and warns against homemade soap mixtures, which can burn plants. Follow the indoor-use, ventilation, protective-equipment, child and pet restrictions exactly. Never combine products or exceed the labelled rate.
After a confirmed pest, restart the observation period only after the chosen control has been completed and no live signs remain. This is IndoorFlora's conservative release rule, not a claim that 21 days fits every pest life cycle. Continue the treatment and recheck schedule given by the authoritative source or product label.
Escalate when the identification is uncertain, the plant declines quickly, or repeated control fails. A local extension plant clinic can help with photographs or a sample. Minnesota Extension says discarding a heavily infested, badly damaged plant may be the necessary and economical way to protect the rest of the collection. Bag it before carrying it past other plants and follow local waste guidance.
Do not repot automatically
Repotting every new arrival can add stress and destroy useful evidence about what was happening in the original mix. Keep the plant in its nursery pot during the first inspection unless the container is broken, drainage is blocked, roots are failing or a confirmed soil problem makes repotting part of the response.
If repotting is necessary, use a clean container and new, pest-free potting mix suited to the species. Minnesota Extension advises against garden soil and open bags that have been stored outside for indoor plants. Keep the old mix contained, clean the work surface and tools, and return the plant to quarantine rather than treating repotting as clearance.
Use a clear release checklist
At the end of the observation window, release the plant only when all of these are true:
- repeated inspections show no live pests, eggs, webbing, honeydew or spreading damage;
- the pot, saucer and drainage area are clean;
- no unexplained symptom is getting worse;
- any treatment course and its required rechecks are complete;
- the plant's light, water and temperature needs fit the destination;
- its exact pet-toxicity status has been checked, and the destination respects it.
Give the plant one final bright-light inspection before moving it. Clean the quarantine tray and tools, then store them dry. Continue looking over the new plant during regular watering after release, just as you should for the rest of the collection.
Quarantine works because it turns one hopeful glance into a short series of deliberate checks. The separate room helps; the consistent inspection and clean handling are what make the waiting time useful.
