A monstera is a rainforest climber that we've talked into living in a pot. Almost everything it wants follows from that one fact. In the wild, a Monstera deliciosa germinates on the forest floor, finds a tree trunk, and hauls itself up toward the light, getting bigger and more dramatically holey the higher it climbs. It's an easygoing plant by houseplant standards — genuinely forgiving of missed waterings and imperfect light — but the two things people most want from it, big leaves and those iconic splits, only show up when you give it the two things it actually needs: enough light, and something to climb.
So this guide is really about steering a climber. Get light and support right, be sensible about water, and a monstera will reward you for years — often outgrowing its corner faster than you expected.
Deliciosa or Adansonii? Know What You Have
The word "monstera" gets used loosely, and the two most common plants sold under it behave differently enough to be worth separating up front.
Monstera deliciosa is the big one — the "Swiss cheese plant," the one that becomes furniture-sized. Its mature leaves are large, thick, and leathery, and its holes eventually extend all the way to the leaf margin, cutting the edge into deep fingers. Confusingly, a smaller plant is often sold as "monstera deliciosa" when it's really the more compact form sometimes labeled Monstera 'Ginny' or a Rhaphidophora; genuine deliciosa keeps getting bigger and never really stops.
Monstera adansonii, the "Swiss cheese vine," stays smaller and trailing. Its leaves are thinner, and — this is the reliable tell — its holes stay fully enclosed inside the leaf, oval windows that never break through to the edge. Adansonii also tends to fenestrate young and eagerly, where deliciosa makes you wait.

Why the Leaves Split (and Why Yours Might Not)
This is the question monstera owners actually lose sleep over, so it's worth being honest about what's known and what's guessed.
The holes have a proper name — fenestrations — and botanists have proposed several overlapping explanations for why a plant would evolve leaves full of gaps. The most-cited idea is light capture: in the dim, dappled understory, a fenestrated leaf spreads the same amount of tissue over a wider area, raising the odds of catching the shifting sunflecks that filter through the canopy while letting other patches of light slip through to leaves lower down. Other proposed benefits include letting heavy tropical rain and wind pass through the leaf rather than tearing it, and helping the plant cope with fluctuating light. These are reasoned hypotheses rather than one settled answer, and the truth may well be a combination — it's a case where the science is genuinely still open, and anyone who tells you there's a single proven reason is overselling it.
What matters for you is the practical part, and that's clearer: fenestration is a sign of maturity plus good light. Young monsteras produce solid, heart-shaped leaves with no holes at all — that's normal, not a problem. As the plant ages and climbs, each new leaf tends to be larger and more deeply cut than the last. If your monstera is stuck making small, solid leaves, the usual culprits are, in order:
- It's simply still young. A plant under a couple of feet tall may not be ready. Patience is the fix.
- Not enough light. This is the most common fixable cause. Fenestration is expensive for the plant, and it won't invest in it in dim conditions.
- No support to climb. Monsteras read "I'm climbing, I've reached the good light" partly through vertical growth. A plant left to sprawl sideways across a shelf often makes smaller, plainer leaves than the same plant given a pole.
There's no spray, fertilizer, or trick that forces holes. Light, age, and a support are the whole recipe.
Light: Bright, Indirect, and More Than You Think
Monsteras are often described as "low light tolerant," and they will survive in a moderately lit room — but survive and thrive are different plants. In too little light, a monstera grows leggy, with long bare stretches of stem between small, solid leaves, and it stops splitting entirely.
The target is bright, indirect light: a spot that feels bright to you, near a window but out of the path of harsh midday sun. A few hours of gentle direct sun — early morning from an east window, for instance — is fine and often welcome. What burns them is hours of hot, direct afternoon summer sun hitting the leaves through glass, which scorches pale, papery patches that don't recover.
- Best: a couple of feet back from a bright east or south window, or right beside a west window with a sheer curtain softening the afternoon.
- Workable: a north-facing window with unobstructed sky, or deeper into a very bright room.
- Too little: interior walls, dim corners, anywhere the plant can't really "see" a window. It'll live, but it'll sulk and stay plain.

Watering: Let the Top Dry, Then Soak
Monsteras like their soil to approach dry at the surface between drinks, then to be watered thoroughly. They are not desert plants — they don't want to go bone dry for weeks — but they're firmly in the "let it dry down, then soak" camp, and far more of them die from staying wet than from thirst.
A reliable routine:
- Check before you pour. Push a finger into the mix. When the top inch or two feels dry, it's time. If it's still damp, wait and check again in a few days.
- Water generously. Pour slowly until water runs freely from the drainage holes, wetting the whole root ball rather than just the surface.
- Drain completely. Tip out the saucer or lift the pot from its cachepot after a few minutes. A monstera left standing in runoff is being overwatered whether you meant to or not.
In a bright spot during the growing season, that often works out to roughly weekly, stretching to every couple of weeks in winter — but treat those as loose expectations, not a schedule. Pot size, light, and the time of year move the interval constantly, which is why checking the soil beats watering by the calendar every time.
The classic overwatering signal is yellowing leaves, often starting with the lower, older ones, sometimes with brown mushy patches and consistently damp soil. Underwatering looks different: leaves droop, edges go crispy, and the soil has pulled away from the pot. When you're genuinely unsure, wait a day — a monstera shrugs off a little dryness far more easily than a little sogginess.
Those aerial roots
Monsteras grow thick aerial roots along their stems — the plant's way of gripping trees and drinking humidity in the wild. Indoors they look startling but they're healthy and normal. You have three fine options: tuck them onto a moss pole (where they'll help anchor the plant), guide them down into the pot, or simply leave them be. Don't feel you have to cut them off; if you do trim an overgrown one, it won't hurt the plant, but there's no need.
Soil, Pots, and Drainage
Monsteras want a mix that holds some moisture but drains fast and stays airy — the roots need oxygen. Straight, dense potting soil packs down and stays wet, which is exactly the condition that rots them.
The standard answer is a chunky aroid mix: regular potting mix loosened with generous handfuls of orchid bark and perlite, often with a little coco coir or charcoal. The bark chunks create air pockets that mimic the loose forest debris these roots evolved in. You don't need to be precious about proportions — roughly two parts potting mix to one part bark to one part perlite gets most people a happy plant.
Two non-negotiables:
- A drainage hole. No exceptions, and no, a layer of rocks in the bottom of a hole-less pot doesn't substitute — it just raises the waterlogged zone closer to the roots. If you love a decorative pot with no hole, use it as a cachepot around a plain nursery pot.
- Don't oversize the pot. A monstera in a pot far too big sits in a mass of soil that stays wet long after the roots have drunk their fill. Go up one size at a time.
Give It Something to Climb

As a hemiepiphyte — a plant that starts in soil but grows up trees — a monstera is built to ascend, and it produces its biggest, most fenestrated leaves when it's climbing rather than sprawling.
A moss pole is the usual choice because the aerial roots grip into it and can take up moisture when you keep the pole damp, but a sturdy wooden plank, coir pole, or even a trellis works. The key is that it's stout enough to carry a mature plant's weight and that you loosely tie the stem in as it grows. If a monstera is leaning and toppling under its own weight, that's not a defect — it's a climber asking for a trunk. Adding support is the fix, not staking it upright like a tomato.
Humidity, Feeding, and Temperature
- Humidity: Monstera deliciosa tolerates ordinary household air well. Higher humidity gives slightly lusher growth and fewer crispy edges, but it isn't essential — misting, in particular, does little of lasting value beyond a brief moment of moisture. Adansonii is the fussier of the two and browns at the edges faster in very dry rooms, so if you run dry in winter, group it with other plants or run a humidifier nearby.
- Feeding: During spring and summer, a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half strength every few weeks is plenty. Ease off in autumn and stop through winter, when growth naturally slows. Fresh potting mix carries a new plant for a while, so there's no rush to feed a recently potted monstera.
- Temperature: Normal comfortable room temperatures suit them. Keep them away from cold drafts, frosty winter windows, and blasting heat vents. They don't tolerate frost.
Repotting and Growth
A healthy monstera grows fast and will need moving up every one to two years. The signs it's ready are the usual ones — roots circling the surface or escaping the drainage holes, water rushing straight through, and growth slowing despite good care. Spring and summer are the kindest times to do it, when the plant is actively growing and recovers quickly. When you repot, go up just one pot size, refresh the chunky mix, and take the opportunity to check the roots — firm and pale is healthy; brown, soft, and foul-smelling means rot to be trimmed away. It's also the natural moment to add or upgrade a climbing support before the plant gets even heavier.

Two pests worth a mention: spider mites (fine webbing and stippled, dusty-looking leaves, especially in dry winter air) and thrips (silvery scarring and distorted new growth). Both are easier to beat when caught early — wipe the leaves down, isolate the plant, and treat with insecticidal soap or a horticultural oil, repeating over a few weeks.
A Note for Pet Owners
Monsteras — both deliciosa and adansonii — are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. Like many plants in the arum family, they contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which cause oral irritation, drooling, mouth pain, and vomiting when an animal bites into a leaf or stem. It's rarely life-threatening, but it's genuinely unpleasant for a pet.
