Watering frequency depends on a dozen variables. But drainage is close to binary: water either has a way out or it doesn't, and when it doesn't, the plant is living in whatever water you last gave it until the soil slowly dries — which, in a sealed pot, can take far too long.
The reason isn't really about the water itself. It's about air. Roots need oxygen as much as leaves need light, and they get it from the pockets of air between soil particles. When water fills every one of those pockets and can't escape, the roots suffocate, then rot. A drainage hole is simply the exit that lets gravity pull the excess away and lets air flood back into the mix. Everything else in this guide is a footnote to that one idea.
What a Drainage Hole Actually Does
Picture the soil in a pot right after a thorough watering. Every pore is full. If there's a hole, gravity immediately starts pulling the loosest water down and out. Within a minute or two the flow slows to a drip, and what's left behind is a rootball that's evenly moist but no longer flooded — the air pockets have reopened, and the roots can breathe again.
That drip-out moment does three things at once:
- It removes the excess. The water the soil can't physically hold against gravity leaves the building.

Quite a lot, actually. This is one of the most persistent pieces of well-meaning misinformation in gardening, and mainstream horticulture has been pushing back on it for decades. A layer of rocks at the bottom of a pot does not improve drainage. In most cases it makes things slightly worse.
Why a gravel layer backfires: the perched water table
The culprit is a bit of soil physics called the perched water table. Water doesn't simply fall out of soil the instant it meets a coarser layer beneath it. Because of capillary action, water clings to the small pores of fine potting mix and won't cross into the large gaps of a gravel layer until the mix directly above is already saturated.
In other words, the soil has to reach the point of holding all the water it possibly can before a single drop passes into the rocks below. That fully saturated zone — the perched water table — always forms at the bottom of the fine soil, regardless of what's under it.

The single most effective thing you can do for drainage is the opposite of the myth: fill the pot with good potting mix all the way down, and give it a real drainage hole. A uniform column of quality mix drains more evenly than any layered arrangement. Is there ever a reason for rocks?
A few narrow ones, none of which are "drainage":

None of this means you have to give up beautiful ceramic that lacks a hole. You just use it as a cachepot — a decorative outer pot that hides a plain, functional inner one.
The system is simple and it's how most nurseries and interior plantscapers work:
- Keep the plant in a lightweight plastic nursery pot that has plenty of drainage holes.
- Slip that nursery pot inside the pretty cachepot.
- To water, either lift the nursery pot out, water it at the sink, let it drain fully, and return it — or water it in place and then pour off whatever collects in the bottom of the cachepot a few minutes later.

- Drill a hole. This is usually the best answer. A ceramic or glass drill bit (a diamond-tipped one for glazed ceramic) turns a decorative pot into a real one in a few minutes. Go slowly, keep the bit wet to reduce cracking and dust, and you've solved the problem permanently. Terracotta and unglazed stoneware drill especially easily.
- Use it as a cachepot. If drilling feels risky or the piece is precious, drop a draining nursery pot inside and follow the empty-the-reservoir routine above. No modification, full drainage.
- Plant directly and water with extreme discipline. This is the last resort, and it's genuinely hard to do well. With no exit, you have to add small, measured amounts of water and never overshoot, because there's no room for error and no way to flush salts. Even experienced growers lose plants this way. If you go this route, choose a drought-tolerant plant, water sparingly, and accept a higher failure rate.

The excess sits there, staying wet for days, and the hole can't help because the water isn't excess in the gravitational sense — the soil is genuinely holding it. The roots suffocate in slow motion.
The fix is to pot up modestly: move a plant into a pot only an inch or two wider than its current one, so the roots can reach the moisture before it stagnates. A generous drainage hole and a right-sized pot are partners; neither does the job alone.
Saucers, Trays, and Standing Water
A drainage hole only helps if the water that leaves actually gets away from the roots. A saucer that fills up and stays full quietly recreates the no-hole problem — the bottom of the rootball wicks that standing water right back up.
