Look closely and you'll usually see a small brown bump on the stem at that spot, sometimes with a stubby dry nub sticking out. That bump is an aerial root primordium — the beginning of a root, waiting for moisture. Roots grow from nodes. New stems grow from nodes. Nothing grows from the smooth stretch of stem between them.

This is why the most common beginner mistake fails every time: a single leaf snipped off with its little stalk (the petiole) but no piece of stem attached. That leaf can sit in water for months, stay green, sometimes even grow a root or two — and it will never become a plant, because there is no node to produce a new growing point. Run your eye down a trailing stem. Every place a leaf emerges, there's a node. On older vines the aerial root nubs are obvious — brown, sometimes slightly woody bumps. On young growth they're subtler, but the leaf attachment point marks the spot regardless.

Timelines vary with warmth, light, and season, but a rough map helps you know whether things are on track:

Warmth speeds everything up. Cuttings root noticeably faster in spring and summer, or in a consistently warm room, than on a cold windowsill in January. Winter propagation works indoors — it's just slower, sometimes by a factor of two.

Don't let roots grow much beyond 10 cm (4 inches) in water if soil is the destination. Roots grown in water are adapted to water — finer, more brittle, less suited to pulling moisture from a solid medium. The longer they develop in water, the harder the transition tends to be. Moving them at the 5–8 cm stage strikes the practical balance.

Method 2: Rooting Directly in Soil

You can skip the water stage entirely: stick cuttings straight into a pot of moist potting mix, node buried, leaf above the surface. The roots that form are soil roots from day one, so there's no transition shock later.

The idea is the same in each case — the medium holds both moisture and air around the node, which produces sturdier roots than water alone while staying nearly as low-risk.

The honest assessment: for pothos, these methods work well but are rarely necessary. They shine for fussier plants that rot easily in water. Moving Water-Rooted Cuttings Into Soil

This is the step where healthy cuttings most often falter, so slow down here.

  5. Expect a sulk. A little limpness or a yellowed lower leaf in the first week or two is common and usually self-resolving. New growth is the all-clear signal — after it appears, taper back to normal watering.

From One Plant to Ten: Building Full Pots

A single cutting in a pot grows into a single sparse vine, which is why lone-cutting propagations often look disappointing for a year. Fullness in a pothos pot is mostly a numbers game: nurseries achieve that lush look by planting many cuttings per pot, and you can do exactly the same.

Practical math: one healthy trailing vine of 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) yields perhaps six to ten single-node cuttings. Two or three long vines, cut up and rooted in a big jar, will fill a pot densely — or start several pots. That's the honest route from one plant to ten; it costs nothing but a few weeks.

Troubleshooting

The stem is turning black or mushy in water

Rot, almost always from stagnant water, a contaminated cut, or a submerged leaf decomposing. Trim the cutting back to firm, healthy tissue above the rot (you need a node remaining above the trim), rinse it, and restart in a clean glass with fresh water. Change water more often this time.

Weeks have passed and there are no roots

Check three things in order. First, is there actually a node under water? (Genuinely the most common answer.) Second, is the cutting warm and getting decent light? A dim corner or a cold sill can stall rooting almost indefinitely. Third, is it winter? Add patience — four to six weeks to first roots isn't alarming in the cold months. If the stem is still firm and green, the cutting is alive and still trying.

Leaves are yellowing on the cutting

One yellowing leaf on an otherwise firm cutting is usually just the cutting reallocating resources, and no cause for action beyond removing the leaf once it's fully yellow. Multiple yellowing leaves plus a soft stem means rot — see above.

The cutting rooted but new leaves are tiny

Normal at first. Cuttings produce small leaves until they have a root system that can support bigger ones. Leaf size builds over months, with good light doing most of the work.

A Few Honest Notes

Rooting hormone is optional for pothos. It can modestly speed rooting in soil, but pothos roots so willingly that most people will notice no meaningful difference. Don't buy it just for this plant.

Highly variegated cuttings root more slowly. White and cream leaf sections contain little chlorophyll, so heavily variegated cuttings have less energy to fund root growth. They root — just give them more light (still indirect) and more time, and avoid taking cuttings from nearly all-white vines.

You can leave pothos in water indefinitely. It will live and grow — more slowly, with smaller leaves — for years in a jar, especially with a few drops of diluted liquid fertilizer every month or so in the growing season. A water-grown pothos is a legitimate choice, not a mistake. Just know that the longer it lives in water, the harder an eventual move to soil becomes.

Keep jars away from pets.
